President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver a keynote address at the Investing in African Mining Indaba in Cape Town on Monday, 03 February 2025.
The event, themed “Future-proofing African Mining, Today!”, will focus on sustainability and economic value for the African mining sector.
Mining Indaba is the world’s largest gathering of mining’s most influential stakeholders and decision-makers vested in African mining.
The President’s participation will highlight the contribution and continued commitment of the Indaba for stimulating interest into African mining for the sustainable economic development of South Africa and the rest of the African continent.
“Mining Indaba is a crucial platform for driving sustainable growth in the African mining sector,” said President Ramaphosa last year at mining indaba 2024. “It is an opportunity to showcase our commitment to economic development and sustainability.”
This year’s event will also definitely delve the last developments of the impact of the African mining sector on the global market, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The conflict has disrupted mining activities, affecting the supply of critical minerals such as cobalt and copper, which are essential for various industries worldwide.
The instability in the region has led to increased prices and supply chain challenges, highlighting the need for sustainable and conflict-free mining practices.
For South Africa, Mining Indaba comes at a time when the country is grappling with the challenge of loadshedding after almost a year of energy stability.
The mining sector, a significant contributor to the South African economy, has been particularly affected by power outages, impacting production and profitability.
The government’s efforts to address the energy crisis and ensure a stable power supply will be a key focus at Mining Indaba conference, as stakeholders discuss strategies to mitigate the impact of loadshedding on the mining industry.
The event will also explore the potential for African mining to contribute to the global transition to renewable energy.
With the increasing demand for minerals used in renewable energy technologies, such as lithium and rare earth elements, Africa has the opportunity to position itself as a key player in the global market. The conference will highlight the importance of sustainable mining practices and the need for investment in infrastructure and technology to support the growth of the sector.
The Investing in African Mining Indaba is poised to be a pivotal event for the African mining sector.
With a focus on sustainability, economic development, and addressing the challenges of conflict and energy stability, the Indaba will provide a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and drive the future of African mining.
As President Ramaphosa emphasized, “Our commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth in the mining sector is unwavering, and Mining Indaba is a testament to our dedication to the future of African mining.”
