The Minerals Council South Africa stated major South African mineral exports to the US platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, coal, manganese, and chrome are excluded from the recently imposed 30% reciprocal tariffs by the US government.
Iron ore and diamonds are subject to the tariffs, though, which would impact South Africa’s mining industry and the world economy.
These responsibilities, one of President Donald Trump’s recent trade measures, are to have a significant impact on world GDP growth and mining demand.
Hugo Pienaar, chief economist at the Minerals Council, was dismayed: “Global growth under threat is bad news for all of South African mining. Business and consumer sentiment, and investment, could all face downward pressure.”
Mzila Mthenjane, Minerals Council CEO, stressed prospects amidst adversity: “South Africa leads the world in PGMs, manganese, and chrome energy technology-critical metals. Though short-term price volatility is unavoidable, longer-term promise is positive, supported by green hydrogen and technological uses innovation.”
The global mining context is also made complex by rising US car prices due to a 25% duty on foreign vehicles, which can reduce demand for auto catalysts made from platinum, palladium, and rhodium. However, a softer rand and gold prices in excess of $3,000 an ounce could offset South Africa’s economy.
