Making one of the largest leaps of faith for the future of Zambia’s mining industry, the government issued Ivanhoe Mines a record 7,757 square kilometers of exploration licenses in the North-Western Province.
The strategic block, three times the size of Ivanhoe’s Western Forelands Exploration Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), positions Zambia as the leader in the world copper market and marks a new era in Ivanhoe’s quest for resources.
Ivanhoe Mines owner Robert Friedland also hailed the move, saying, “Our entry into Zambia represents a new era of fervor in Ivanhoe Mines’ expansionist agenda for expanding our exploration footprint.”
Ivanhoe geologists will use cutting-edge technology in exploration like high-resolution airborne geophysics surveys to drill deep to discover copper deposits hidden under Kalahari sands in the region. The move is as per the vision of Zambia to become the world’s leading copper producer.
President Hakainde Hichilema also received the move in positive terms, adding that it stood to transform the economy of Zambia in the future. “This copper exploration investment is not merely a demonstration of our government’s vision to mine over 3 million tonnes of copper by the year 2031, but it’s about unlocking opportunities, empowering people, and making our resources work for all Zambians,” he stated.
Ivanhoe expansion in Zambia will also do good to the region in the future, by way of jobs, local community development, and the production of hydroelectric power used in the process of mining activity. As the exploration activity is going to be initiated in the year 2025, Ivanhoe Mines’ collaboration with the government of Zambia is a collective vision of transparency, justice, and development.
This achievement positions Zambia as a regional giant as an economic and mining colossus, providing the country and its people with a defining benchmark.
