In a reassuring turn of events, all 260 employees trapped underground at Kloof 7 following a shaft incident on 22 May 2025 have safely surfaced.
Sibanye-Stillwater (Tickers JSE: SSW and NYSE: SBSW) confirmed that comprehensive safety inspections and integrity assessments were completed before miners were brought to the surface.
The first group surfaced at 13:30 CAT, while the last employees returned at 19:30 CAT. At no point was there a risk of injury, as the miners remained at their stations underground rather than taking emergency escape routes requiring long walking distances.
“Safety remains our core priority, and we will not resume operations until we are confident that all necessary remedial actions have been implemented,” Sibanye-Stillwater CEO Neal Froneman stated, acknowledging the dedication of mine rescue and medical teams.
The incident was caused by the skip door of the Kloof 7 sub-shaft rock winder opening at the loading point on Level 39, impacting Levels 40, 41, and below.
Swift response teams ensured workers had access to food, water, and medical assistance, with further medical evaluations offered for all affected employees.
Sibanye-Stillwater is actively engaging with the Chief Inspector of Mines, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, and trade unions to finalize risk assessments before resuming operations.
The outcome of these evaluations will shape labour safety standards and set a precedent for workplace emergency protocols in South Africa’s mining sector.
This successful recovery effort highlights South Africa’s commitment to workplace safety, reassuring investors and the mining labour force.
The proactive measures reflect growing industry resilience, ensuring stability across one of the country’s largest employment sectors.
