South Africa’s Agriculture: A Catalyst for Inclusive Growth

South Africa’s agricultural sector is at the heart of the nation’s economic growth and food security, as emphasized by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his recent newsletter.

Highlighting its resilience and transformative potential, the President revealed that South Africa’s agricultural exports hit a record $13.7 billion last year, with 44% going to African countries, 21% to Asia and the Middle East, 19% to the EU, and 6% to the Americas.

The sector employs over 924,000 people directly, with an additional 200,000 in the value chain, making it a cornerstone of rural development and economic rejuvenation.

“The farming sector of South Africa is vital to our growth agenda. It has shown resilience in the past and will likely continue along this encouraging and promising path,” said President Ramaphosa. He stressed the importance of inclusivity, equity, and land reform to empower black farmers, who currently contribute only 10% to commercial output.

The President also pointed to structural reforms addressing infrastructure challenges, such as roads, rail, and ports, which constrain agricultural growth.

Initiatives like the Agriculture and Agro-processing Masterplan and blended finance instruments are paving the way for sustainable expansion.

Globally, South Africa’s agricultural advancements bolster its position as a key player in international markets, while locally, they promise to uplift vulnerable rural areas and drive transformation.

This renewed focus on agriculture not only strengthens South Africa’s economy but also positions it as a beacon of inclusive growth on the global stage.
