South Africa’s Eskom has shattered expectations with 105 consecutive days of uninterrupted power supply, a dramatic leap from just 36 loadshedding-free days in FY2024.
In FY2025 alone, the utility has delivered 352 days without loadshedding, meeting over 97% of electricity demand this winter.
The Energy Availability Factor (EAF) has climbed to a month-to-date average of 66.15%, while the Unplanned Capability Loss Factor (UCLF) has dropped to 27.3%.
Diesel spend remains under budget, and open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) usage has plunged to 0.16%, down from 0.78% the previous week—clear signs of structural recovery and operational discipline.
“This milestone builds on the momentum of Financial Year 2025,” Eskom stated, “and reflects a significant improvement from the 36 days achieved in FY2024.”
The utility emphasized the generation fleet’s resilience, with breakdown-related losses now at 8 948MW well below the critical 10 000MW threshold. “The Winter Outlook remains valid. With just two days remaining, the power system is well-positioned to maintain stability and reliably meet demand.”
Eskom’s strategic maintenance averaged 6 968MW between 15–28 August, and the utility plans to return 4 830MW of generation capacity ahead of the evening peak on 1 September. Kusile Unit 6, contributing 720MW since March, is expected to enter commercial operation by September, further reinforcing grid reliability.
For South Africa, this performance marks a turning point in energy security, with ripple effects across industrial output, inflation control, and investor sentiment.
Globally, it positions South Africa as a more stable and attractive destination for infrastructure investment, energy-linked assets, and portfolio diversification. With Eskom’s Summer Outlook due in September, market participants will be watching closely for signs of sustained momentum and long-term reliability.
