Sibanye-Stillwater has finalized a strategic chrome transaction with Glencore Merafe Venture, untapping a 20-year fast-track in contracted chrome volume delivery and upfront cash flow benefits in its South African PGM operations.
With effect from 1 November 2025, the deal renews historic terms in the Marikana Contract and introduces a new Chrome Management Agreement (CMA), making chrome a core revenue stream rather than an inert by-product.
The transaction is expected to significantly increase Sibanye’s share of free cash flow from chrome recovery, improve operating efficiencies, and support commercial viability of brownfield expansion opportunities.
According to the company, the improved delivery of chrome volumes will significantly improve feed and recovery rates at the Marikana Chrome Recovery Plants, while Glencore’s processing ability is expected to decrease operating costs for all relevant assets.
Sibanye’s other chrome recovery plants will automatically benefit from the value-adding terms of the CMA, further reinforcing the Group’s chrome economics.
“The cancellation of the Glencore Merafe agreements marks a significant milestone in realizing long-term value from our large chrome by-products,” said CEO Richard Stewart. ”Aligning operational capacity and commercial intent, we are creating the foundation for sustainability in our SA PGM business, to the benefit of all stakeholders and delivering optimal returns to the Group.”
For global markets, this news represents a shift in Sibanye-Stillwater’s asset monetization strategy, with implications for commodity-linked valuations, ESG-directed capital flows, and supply dynamics in stainless steel and alloy markets.
Analysts see the deal as a strategic move to hedge on PGM volatility and place Sibanye well within the circular economy. The deal also points to a broader industry push to optimize secondary streams and synergize operations to unlock latent value.
Emerging markets miner and diversified producer investors and portfolio managers will likely reassess Sibanye’s exposure to chrome as a key driver of future profits and project pipeline strength.
