There is something to be happy about in a milestone of victory for South Africans because Eskom put the sixth unit of the Kusile Power Station on the country’s national grid on Sunday at 4:45 pm.
The victory is taking Eskom closer to accomplishing one of the biggest infrastructural projects in the nation in order to generate 4,800MW of power at capacity.
The achievement is the core of Eskom’s Generation Recovery Plan which has a vision to provide 2,500MW of incremental capacity onto the grid by March 2025, and which can potentially provide phenomenally high energy stability and economic growth.
Eskom Generation Group Executive Bheki Nxumalo was also among those who congratulated the milestone: “This is a proof of the tireless efforts of Eskom employees and contractors. It’s a milestone in the supply of safe electricity in South Africa and generation of electricity for generations to come.” Specifically, Kusile is the first African generation plant to apply wet flue gas desulfurization technology, which reduces sulfur dioxide emissions and is still in line with global environmental sustainability values.
Eskom CEO Dan Marokane made its value its defense: “Our vision is to have a robust, stable, and sustainable power system. It is fundamental to economic development and creating a better future for South Africans.”
Unit 6 going online will make the power sector stronger and less reliant on unstable sources of power, and that will bring in investors and drive industries like mining, manufacturing, and agriculture.
The surplus power capacity will be a blessing for families and companies alike, as it will stimulate business activity across the country.
Whilst Eskom stumbles, triumph like Kusile Unit 6 is hope and determination and victory in the creation of a generation of future South African energy security a guarantee of stability and progression to yet unreleased generations.
