Eskom Restores 800MW as Medupi Unit 4 Returns Early

In a pivotal moment for South Africa’s energy recovery, Eskom has brought Unit 4 of the Medupi Power Station back online eight months ahead of schedule restoring 800MW to the national grid.

The unit’s return at precisely 20:29 on Sunday, 6 July 2025, is part of Eskom’s broader drive to add 2,500MW in generation capacity to stabilize supply.

The generator had been out of operation since a catastrophic explosion on 8 August 2021 damaged the stator. Eskom secured a refurbished unit from the Netherlands, enabling the swift restoration.

“The return of Medupi Unit 4 marks a major milestone in our strategic objective of achieving operational stability,” said Eskom Group Chief Executive, Dan Marokane.

“This achievement was made possible through the efforts of our Generation, Projects, and Procurement teams, supported by contractors.” Group Executive for Generation Bheki Nxumalo added: “We are confident Unit 4 will deliver stable, reliable electricity, supporting our grid recovery efforts.”

More than a technical recovery, the Unit 4 restart reflects strides in resilience, innovation, and sustainable infrastructure. Medupi Power Station, situated in Limpopo’s dry belt, is one of the world’s largest dry cooled coals fired plants designed to operate efficiently with minimal water usage.

It incorporates supercritical technology that burns less coal and emits fewer greenhouse gases. Medupi reuses all its process water and is flue gas desulphurization ready, potentially reducing Sulphur dioxide emissions by 90%.

The impact extends far beyond megawatts. Medupi has channeled over R2.9 billion into local socio-economic development. Since operations began, it has invested more than R145 million in community health, education, rural infrastructure, and skills development benefiting more than 80,000 people. This investment underscores Medupi’s role not just as a power asset, but as a driver of long-term economic and social value.

The return of Unit 4 also carries meaningful implications for South Africa’s broader economy. A more stable power supply eases the operational uncertainty that has plagued key industries such as mining, logistics, and manufacturing.

By mitigating load-shedding, this additional capacity can restore investor confidence, reduce downtime costs, and support more predictable growth planning.

While deeper structural reforms are still needed across the energy sector, milestones like Medupi reaffirm the potential for recovery and the tangible benefits that follow when strategy aligns with execution.
